Twirling Your Thumbs?

twirling thumbsA lot of times, when things are going good, I notice I am twirling my thumbs. Why? Because I am bored. Peter Drucker’s book Managing the Nonprofit Organization ask the question, “Are you enjoying a pleasant routine?” If so, get yourself out of it NOW! Drucker tells us a pleasant routine leads to boredom, which leads to BURNOUT. When you are board, you stop caring about what you are doing, and that makes it extremely hard to force yourself to get up, go to work, and get it done.
The usual accepted theory is the need to change the routine. There is an element of truth to that. However, Drucker names “no longer learning” as the underlying foe. A simple fix could be routinely asking others for feedback, or looking at how others do the same thing. The author gives the example of a principle visiting other schools to see and understand how they handle similar problems.
So the question we need to focus on is this: “What are you learning?” Notice something that others do well and ask how come they do it so well. Find ways to challenge yourself to learn, and prevent yourself from boredom, from burnout, and continue in the calling God has for you!
