People tend to ask me for things to help in the moment of stressful situations. I generally tell them, in the moment is a bad time to realize you are stressed out. However, it’s better late than never. Even at times of highly stressful situations there are tactics which can be used to help out. Breathing deeply is a popular suggestion. A few minutes of this can help lower blood pressure, and slow the heart rate.
Another complaint I hear often from those in ministry is that of being pulled in multiple directions. Typically from ladies who minister in daycares or Sunday School classes. Multiple little ones calling your name at the same time can make it difficult to be focused. However a life skill we should all learn is to be present in the moment. Take that deep breath talked about above, and on the exhale actually focus on one thing and learn to ignore the rest.
Another suggestion for in the moment stress reduction is to alter the situation. Going back to our amazing ladies dealing with the 30 kids who are calling her name all at one time, it could be good to have your expectations set at the beginning of class. We could tell the kids to be aware of the situation, call our name one time, and wait for a response.
Adapting to the situation is always helpful too. Remember times that you have already adapted, such as to a job that was stressful at first, but now comes easy. Tell yourself, I adapted to that, I can adapt to this. Use emphasis on I CAN! On the other hand, be aware of and stop negative thoughts.
I hope you enjoyed reading these few tips, and thanks for giving us your time. Our purpose is to provide a place of retreat for those in ministry to combat and prevent stress and burnout.
